Make Purpose a Priority at Work
If your employees say they “want purpose,” they’re not asking you to save the world. They’re asking to matter.
Purpose is no longer a “nice to have.”
It’s one of the top things employees look for in a company.
Not every company is a nonprofit and not every business has a mission that sounds heroic on a billboard.
Some make toilet seats.
Or AI tools.
Or pet food.
Or TVs.
Or parts no one outside the industry ever thinks about.
That’s not the problem.
The problem is when leaders try to manufacture purpose instead of listening to employees.
Here’s what actually works:
LISTEN. REFLECT. RESPOND.
Purpose isn’t created by a mission statement alone.
It’s created when people can connect their daily work to real impact. 🥰
Community involvement is one of the easiest, highest-ROI ways to make that connection tangible.
Here’s a simple framework I’ve seen work again and again:
1️⃣ Commit to an annual giving budget (starting small is OK!), and/or a company-wide community volunteer initiative.
2️⃣ Ask employees where they want to give back - financially, through time, or both.
3️⃣ Narrow the focus to a small number of causes aligned with shared values.
4️⃣ Let employees help decide where the money and/or volunteer time is invested.
If your retention strategy does not include purpose, it is time to rethink it.
